    Every time I listen to Liber Scriptus, it reminds me that that was my most important solo as a lyrical singer, being a mezzo-soprano boy, and my teacher, she was the soprano, we were sitting together and everything was very beautiful, Verdi's requiem will always have a place in my heart.

    The thing about the tempi (more elastic than others) is that I think LB was taking into account the very particular echo at St Pauls - so you can't just plough ahead - you have to let the sound ring, and then die before moving to the next phrase - take for instance "et preces hymnus". how he takes it slower - and allows each phrase to ring and end before moving on - for clarity, taste, musicianship and sheer brilliance.

    This entire performance is a masterpiece itself, but that Dies Irae in particular is unlike any other I've heard in my opinion. The trumpets are extremely clear and the percussion is extremely powerful. Altogether mixed with this tempo really emphasizes the anger of the Dies Irae without it feeling too rushed. Bravo.

      ...The terror of the days of wrath, the terrible wrath of God...The entire piece presents the pleas of the supplicant, the frightened, the guilt-ridden supplicant to be spared the Dies Ira, It represents the pleas of the self-confessed but deeply penitent sinner that God's mercy be bestowed on him and his.

    This was the second performance of the Requiem, which had lost Franco Corelli; the replacement tenor for the first performance was Robert Tear. Of course, PD was very prominent by February of 1970, but not yet a star name. Bernstein did not revisit the work after making the audio recording for Columbia, after which Bernstein did not conduct Verdi again. This was the first in the series of videos he made for his Amberson Company over the next twenty years.

    I am not a Verdi worshiper (no one is perfect) but the requiem mass is one of the most beautiful things I have ever heard. This Bernstein then ...

    Like Handel's MESSIAH, Verdi's REQUIEM is essentially an opera in concert form.

    • @jasonhurd4379
      @jasonhurd4379 Год назад

      Hmmm...not really. Despite the many superficially theatrical moments, Messiah is essentially a meditative work, geared toward contemplation. Händel came much nearer to opera in Belshazzar, Esther, Samson (which the Met has staged), Esther, and in his greatest composition of all: Jephtha.

      Not at all. Verdi's Requiem is beyond any form, but if we want to pick one to dress up this titanic masterpiece it's clearly the symphony at its highest .

      Does the form really matter? It is an exquisite work of art undergirding ancient prayers for the dead.

    This Requiem Mass is perfect music for Lenny Bernstein - essentially operatic, it was never intended by Verdi for performance in a church! . . . it's also interesting to note that the LSO didn't appear to include a single female musician at this time (1970), at least as far as the cameras showed . . . and that Lenny split the choir into 3, with the men [tenors & basses] in a central block . . . and he conducts the whole thing from memory, with great attention to detail, and immense physical energy - which certainly drives the performers where he wants them.

      @@paoloa.rossini413 But only just that once, Paolo! Are you related to the Rossini for whom Verdi originally wrote the 'Libera Me"? . . . it was not until 5 years later that he decided to complete a full Requiem when his humanist friend Allesandro Manzoni died. Note that he was a 'humanist'. His deadline was just one year later - Manzoni's birthday on 25th May - but the only venue available for that date was the church of San Marco in Milan., conducted (as you said) by Verdi himself. 3 days later it was performed in La Scala, to triumphant acclaim - then taken to the Opera-Comique in Paris for seven performances; and subsequently to the Royal Albert Hall in London.

      @@michaelpatterson5811 It should be noted that Manzoni was yes a humanist, but also deeply religious. Initially a calvinist, he converted to catholicism after a famous episode in which he feared he had lost his wife during a crowd surge in Paris. Definitely Manzoni was much more of a churchgoer than Verdi, whose dislike for the church institution, and especially for its desire to wield power based purely on religious dogma, is well documented in his life and works. It is very interesting to compare Verdi’s personal “humanistic spirituality” expressed in this piece, as you said not necessarily meant to be represented in a place of prayer, with his disdain for the church as an institution of power represented in the amazing Great Inquisitor scene in Don Carlo
